OUR HISTORY
an emblematic place
At the beginning of the 18th century, when the small hamlet of Carouge was still under the protection of the Duchy of Savoy, notary minutes already refer to the Lion d'Or inn. The annexation to the Kingdom of Piedmont-Sardinia marked the beginning of Carouge's expansion thanks to its location.
At the crossroads of trade routes, most inns were equipped with stables. The Café du Lion d'Or was no exception, as the original sign indicates. Population growth, which increased 10-fold between 1772 and 1792, forced the Sardinian town to develop as an urban center. It was during this period that the Café du Lion d'Or moved to 53 rue Ancienne. An address it would never leave, making it one of Carouge's oldest bistros.
